Discussing microStretching for Recovery & Performance with Nikos Apostolopoulos
On a recent stopover in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, I had the fortune of being able to sit down for coffee with my good friend, Dr. Nikos Apostolopoulos, to discuss his recent work with microStretching therapy. Nikos has been working overseas with numerous sports these last few years, and has made a major impact on both the recovery status and performance abilities of many individual athletes.
We discuss the neuromuscular mechanisms associated with low intensity stretching in terms of re-setting muscle tone and improving overall tendon health, as well as the general impact on the central nervous system. Nikos has also conducted extensive research in the area of reducing inflammatory response...

    Thank you! Doing my first HYROX event in September. My strength base is good, but need to do more running (things used to be the other way around before an ankle injury a few years back). Done a lot of CrossFit training as well. Thinking in terms of "interval runs" and "long slow runs" is gonna help a lot.

On some schedules i`ve seen them on recovery days (British group) 100 -200 which eliminates them with the MxS phase at week 10 then no more med ball. (should they be eliminated or maintained?) Other sources i`ve heard do them with the sprint days. Does it really matter?

    • @DerekMHansen
      @DerekMHansen 7 месяцев назад

      If you haven't done much in the way of sprinting, I would start with 2-3 sets at a very easy acceleration pace (sub-maximal for sure). Put in some workouts, increase volume over several weeks and then gradually increase speed. You may find yourself settling in at 3-5 sets a few times a week, but it's a great workout for general strength, speed and cardiovascular fitness. I commonly get my hear rate up in the 150-170 bpm zone at my age (54 years old).

    Would the air bubble not absorb some of the force on ground contact, and some of the force created by the athlete? Or does the carbon fibre plate stop that? Do you have any follow up thoughts? I greatly appreciate the video and your investment on the spikes for this review! 🤜🤛

    • @DerekMHansen
      @DerekMHansen 8 месяцев назад

      My sense of it is that the air bubble combines with the carbon fibre plate to create a spring-board-like effect that bounces the athlete off the ground. The problems seem to arise from the durability of the air bladder system, as I've heard that there have been a significant number of cases where the air bladder has ruptured. I will say that the air bladder system does make impacts feel more comfortable (less sharp impact on ground contact). The question would be, can this system be tuned so that it provides a stiffer ground contact for shorter sprint distances.

    So when setting the athlete up they should be aligned just behind the beam or in the beam?

    • @DerekMHansen
      @DerekMHansen 8 месяцев назад

      It really depends on the type of start you are trying to measure. For a conventional three-point start for a 40 yard dash, we were using the in-beam setup, where the athlete was within the beam and the timer started when they left the start position. But, we have also done some testing with the break-beam setup, where the athlete breaks the beam with their body. The only issue with the break-beam setup is that the times can be less consistent if a hand or someones long hair prematurely breaks the beam - resulting in a slower time. The in-beam start seems to be more consistent for static starts, where break beam is more consistent on flying starts. It may also be dictated by the height of the beam that you set (which part of the body breaks the beam).

    As seen in comments below there are some issues with sample size. But I think there are other factor you can’t discount. (1) Is player more likely to suffer injury when playing on a surface that is not the same as his home field surface? (2). Are players more likely to suffer injury in an open air stadium where weather is a large factor versus a dome stadium where climate is controlled. There are many other factors that also need to be considered, such as previous injuries, age, and on and on. To summit up this is not something that can be done in eight minutes on the chalkboard but I do think this is an interesting topic that needs some serious statistical analysis. And this is not limited to a NFL I am an avid fan of women’s soccer and this year alone there has been an unprecedented number of ACL injuries and not just in the United States but internationally. I believe the national women’s soccer league or perhaps US soccer is investigating the cause of a spike in these numbers.

      I just found this academic paper that looked at ACL injuries in pro soccer league across 5 seasons. I’m still reading but so far very interring. 2 things I found interesting so far. (1) Training injury rate is higher than match day rates. There is speculation that this could be attributed to quality of training field v stadium field. (2) 37 total players were studied - 18 were contact injuries and 19 were non-contact. I’m still reading it but interesting info. bmjopensem.bmj.com/content/bmjosem/4/1/e000461.full.pdf

    • @DerekMHansen
      @DerekMHansen Год назад

      Hello Errol. I would say that if you are on-boarding athletes in a preparatory phase and getting them into shape, you could specify a 70% perceived effort to make sure they completed the 10 reps adequately. If they are in good shape and have some sprint volume accumulated over 6-8 weeks, you could specify a 90% effort. If you want to me precise you can use timing gates on 5 segments in one direction and calculate from their best 10m effort. I’ll often use cumulative times over 10 reps starting between 90-120 sec per rep. We’ve done conditioning sets at Level 10 in North Vancouver in the winter in 65-70 sec sets.
